Dr. Joyce Elam
Florida International University Center for Leadership

Strengths-Based Leadership

Dr. Elam is the Interim Vice-Provost, Office of Analysis and Information Management, Florida International University, and Dean Emeritus, College of Business, Florida International University. She previously was the James L. Knight Eminent Scholar in Management Information Systems at the College of Business, Florida International University, an associate professor at the University of Texas and an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. Dr. Elam was a Marvin Bower Fellow at the Harvard Business School during the 1987-88 academic year. She earned both her PhD in operations research (1977) and her BA in mathematics (1970) from the University of Texas.

Dr. Elam is known for her work in helping to develop women leaders. She developed and offers annually through the FIU Center for Leadership the Women Leaders Program. She also teaches leadership in FIU’s Executive MBA program and is a frequent speaker on this topic.

Dr. Elam is a member of the Board of Trustees of Baptist Health South Florida, Baptist Health Enterprises Board of Directors and Baptist Outpatient Services Board of Directors, and the Vice-Chair of the Baptist Health Medical Group Board of Directors. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Bentley University. She also serves on the board of Our Kids of Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.

She is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2012 Coral Gables Community Foundation Education Award, AXA Advisors 2008 International Business Woman of the Year by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, the 2007 Academy of International Business Fellows’ International Dean of the Year, and the 2007 Athena Award given by the Coral Gables Community Foundation.

Dr. Mayra Beers
Florida International University Center for Leadership

The Inside of Leadership
2 & 3 December 2016

Dr. Mayra Beers is Director of Strategy and Operations and James L. Knight Research Fellow for the Center for Leadership in the College of Business at Florida International University (FIU).

Mayra holds MA and Ph.D. degrees from FIU and her work has been recognized with the James R. Scobie Memorial Award , the Jay I. Kislak Foundation Prize, and a Mellon Foundation Fellowship, among others. Dr. Beers has participated in leadership development programs at institutions such as Harvard Business School, Wharton, Columbia, the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, and The Center for Creative Leadership. She holds graduate certificates in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and in African New World Studies.

A founding member of the Center for Leadership, Dr. Beers has been instrumental in the development and implementation of numerous executive leadership development programs and workshops including the Senior Executive Leadership Program, the Women Leaders Program, the High Potential Leader and the Principals Leadership Development Program, where she now serves as Program Chair. Most recently, she worked on the development of the Physician Leaders Program in collaboration with the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at FIU. She developed and was primary facilitator for the Center's first leadership development program offered in a foreign country in Spanish, presented to Wal-Mart executives in Puerto Rico. In collaboration with Dr. Joyce Elam, the Executive Dean of the College of Business, Dr. Beers worked on the "Florida's Woman-Led Businesses Study," (2006-2011), a five year report on the challenges and successes of women who lead major organizations in Florida. Dr. Beers' work has been published in Cuban Studies, and she is a contributing author to The Fragmented University (Jossie-Bass).

Dr. Beers previously served as Chief of Staff for FIU President Modesto A. Maidique and as Founding Associate Corporate Secretary for the FIU Board of Trustees from 2001 until 2009. Prior to her work in the Office of the President, she was a Research Associate for the University President and Provost.

Dr. Beers is an active lifelong volunteer for numerous causes and especially in education-related activities. She was born in Havana, Cuba and currently resides in Miami. She and her husband Randy have two sons.

Dr. Nathan Hiller
Florida International University Center for Leadership

Leadership Accelerators and Derailers

Dr. Nathan J. Hiller, is the Academic Director of the FIU Center for Leadership and an Associate Professor of Management and International Business at Florida International University.

As a consultant and practitioner, Nathan has consulted and taught managers and executives in the areas of strategic leadership development, organizational change, culture, human capital planning, and teamwork with clients including: Hewlett Packard, Norwegian Cruise Line, The United States Postal Service, Boston Scientific, Novartis, Burger King Corporation, Telefonica, and The United States Marine Corps. Dr. Hiller is the Faculty Director of The High Potential Leader program—a 4-day leadership development program for director-level managers—and he works regularly with C-level executives through the FIU Center for Leadership.

As an academic, Dr. Hiller's focus is on understanding the strategic implication s of executive personality, as well as enhancing the way that organizations build their leadership pipeline. His research has appeared in most of the top journal s in the field of Management, and he sits on the editorial boards of The Leadership Quarterly and the Journal of Applied Psychology. He spent the 2012 academic year as a Visiting Scholar at Cornell University and at the University of Washington, Seattle and has also taught a graduate seminar in leadership at Getulio Vargas (FGV) in Rio de Janeiro.

Dr. Hiller loves to travel and draws regularly from his experience living in 4 countries on 3 continents in 10 cities. He received his B.A. from the University of Calgary and both his M.S. and Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Hock-Peng Sin
Florida International University Center for Leadership

Strategic Leadership

Dr. Hock-Peng Sin is Assistant Professor of management at the Department of Management and International Business at Florida International University. Dr. Sin received his PhD in industrial-organizational psychology from the Pennsylvania State University.

His research areas include leadership, management of dynamic performance, as well as multi-level methodology in organizational research. Dr. Sin have published more than a dozen articles and book chapters in premiere outlets such as Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Leadership Quarterly, Organizational Research Methods, Personnel Psychology, and Strategic Management Journal. His research has garnered over 900 scholarly citations according to the Google Scholar index.

He regularly reviews for several academic journals and currently serves as editorial board member for the Organizational Research Methods, the Journal of Applied Psychology and the Journal of Business and Psychology. He is also the recipient of several best paper awards including the Leadership Quarterly Best Paper Award for a paper published in 2011.

In addition to teaching organizational behavior at the undergraduate-, MBA-, and PhD-levels, Dr. Sin also teaches strategic leadership, traps in decision making, and 360-degree executive feedback at several of the 4-day leadership development programs through the FIU Center for Leadership.

Dr. Keith Black
Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association

Issues in International Finance
10 & 11 February 2017

Keith Black has over twenty-five years of financial market experience, serving approximately half of that time as an academic and half as a trader and consultant to institutional investors. He currently serves as Managing Director of Curriculum and Exams for the CAIA Association. During his most recent role at Ennis Knupp + Associates, Keith advised foundations, endowments and pension funds on their asset allocation and manager selection strategies in hedge funds, commodities and managed futures. Prior experience includes commodities derivatives trading at First Chicago Capital Markets, stock options research and CBOE market-making for Hull Trading Company, and building quantitative stock selection models for mutual funds and hedge funds for Chicago Investment Analytics. Dr. Black previously served as an assistant professor and senior lecturer at the Illinois Institute of Technology's Stuart school, where he taught courses in both traditional and alternative investments.

He contributes regularly to The CFA Digest, and has published in a number of journals, including The Journal of Investing and The Journal of Alternative Investments. He is the author of the book "Managing a Hedge Fund," as well as a contributor to the second and third editions of the CAIA Level I and Level II textbooks. Dr. Black was named to Institutional Investor magazine's list of "Rising Stars of Hedge Funds" in 2010.

Dr. Black earned a BA from Whittier College, an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University, and a PhD from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and was a member of the inaugural class of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) candidates.

Dr. Robert Weishan
University College of the Cayman Islands

Management in Organizations
10 & 11 March 2017

Dr. Weishan joined the UCCI Business Studies faculty in January 2007 as a professor of management and in May 2007 was appointed to the Chair of Business Studies. Since joining UCCI, Dr. Weishan has also worked extensively with the development initiatives for the Civil Service College as well as collaborated with the design of the new UCCI master degree program in human resources management. He continues to teach upper level management courses within the Business Studies Department as well as management classes within the Civil Service College.

Just prior to joining UCCI, Dr. Weishan worked for three years at the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism as the manager for human capital development. Prior to that, Dr. Weishan was the principle consultant and owner of his own management consulting and training firm in Santiago, Chile; a senior consultant for leadership development & organization effectiveness at CMS Energy Corporation; the State Director for Career Education for the State of Michigan; a Fulbright visiting professor in Mexico; manager of technical assistance to the HEART trust in Jamaica; and an advisor to the Government of the Dominican Republic. Dr. Weishan earned his PhD and two master degrees at the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Belinda Blessitt
University College of the Cayman Islands

HR Management--Case Analyses
7 & 8 April 2017

Dr. Blessitt-Vincent joined UCCI in 2003 and brings to the University College a broad spectrum of expertise in the areas of Travel and Tourism, Customer Service Management, Human Resource Management and Sales and Marketing. She was instrumental in developing the curricula and modules for the Bachelor of Science Programme in Business Administration with concentration in Marketing and Management. Also, she implemented changes in the Hospitality Studies Programmes which have further strengthened the partnership between UCCI and the industry.

As co-chair of the Tourism Apprenticeship Training Advisory Council, she supported the timely introduction of the MOT's Tourism Apprenticeship Programme which is designed to create a cadre of Caymanian hospitality professionals in occupations traditionally under-represented by Caymanians. As an Assistant Professor, she continues to fill many roles such as lecturing in Marketing, Human Resource Management, Business and Hospitality.

Dr. Blessitt-Vincent sits on the CITA Training, Education and Scholarship Committee, Ministry of Education HR Strategy Committee and LCTG Early Childhood Committee. Among her many qualifications, she possesses a MBA, BSc in Tourism Management, Certificate in Public Relations, Diploma in Education, "Train the Trainer" Certification (ASTD), Global Remuneration Professional (GRP) designation and is a Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE).

Dr. J.D. Mosley-Matchett
University College of the Cayman Islands

Dr. Mosley-Matchett joined the University College of the Cayman Islands faculty in August 2009, but she is a seasoned educator with more than 20 years of successful teaching experience at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Her educational credentials include an MBA (December 1986) and a doctorate in Business Administration (May 1997) from the University of Texas at Arlington; a Juris Doctor (law degree) from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas (August 1984); and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia (May 1980).

As a professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, Dr. Mosley-Matchett taught the following classes in the College of Business Administration and the School of Fine Arts:

  • Buyer behavior
  • Marketing policy
  • Electronic commerce
  • Communication law
  • Public relations
  • Advertising management
  • Marketing research
  • Internet marketing strategy
  • Business communication skills
  • News reporting

Locally, she has served as the Managing Director of a Caymanian company called Words & Images and as the Marketing Executive for the Cayman Islands Tourism Attraction Board. In the U.S., she was the President of Sterling Impression, Inc. for more than 20 years. Her numerous clients have included the Cayman Islands Portfolio of the Civil Service, the Caymanian Bar Association, IBM, Texas Instruments, and J.C. Penney.
